Queen Amina
Amina was a powerful queen of the city-state of Zaria, located in what is now Nigeria, during the late 16th century. She was the daughter of Bakwa Turunku, the first woman to rule over the kingdom of Zazzau (also known as Zaria). Amina is renowned for her military prowess and leadership abilities. According to legend, Amina was a skilled warrior and fought in numerous battles alongside her troops, leading them to victory against neighboring city-states. She is also credited with expanding the kingdom's territory and establishing trade relationships with neighboring regions. Amina was known for her strategic thinking and ability to negotiate alliances. She is said to have personally led military campaigns and was feared by her enemies. Her leadership and military success were so significant that she is remembered in Nigerian history as "Amina, the warrior queen of Zazzau" the original warrior queen! Despite the limited historical records available, Amina's legacy continues to inspire women in Nigeria and beyond, as a symbol of female empowerment and leadership.
Queen Ranavalona
Queen Ranavalona I, also known as Ranavalona the Cruel, was a ruler of the Kingdom of Madagascar from 1828 to 1861. She came to power following the death of her husband, King Radama I, and ruled with an iron fist, implementing a series of brutal policies and repressive measures to consolidate her power and resist foreign influence. Queen Ranavalona was known for her fierce opposition to European imperialism and her efforts to preserve Madagascar's traditional culture and way of life. She fiercely resisted the attempts of French and British colonizers to exert control over her kingdom, expelling Christian missionaries and engaging in several bloody conflicts with foreign powers. However, her reign was marked by extreme brutality and oppression, and she is widely regarded as one of the most ruthless monarchs in history. She ordered the execution of thousands of people who opposed her rule, and implemented a number of cruel punishments, including impalement, disembowelment, and death by being trampled by elephants. Queen Njinga Mbandi
Queen Njinga Mbandi was a 17th-century queen of the Ndongo and Matamba kingdoms, located in what is now Angola. Njinga Mbandi was born into the ruling family of Ndongo and was trained in military tactics and diplomacy from a young age. She formed alliances with neighboring kingdoms and European powers to resist Portuguese aggression, often using her diplomatic skills to play one side against the other. In addition to her military and political prowess, Njinga Mbandi was also known for her religious and cultural tolerance, welcoming missionaries of various Christian denominations and allowing religious freedom within her kingdoms. Despite facing many challenges and setbacks, Njinga Mbandi successfully defended her kingdoms for over 30 years. She died in 1663 at the age of 80, but her legacy as a skilled leader and fierce fighter for her people has endured.
Queen Nandi
Queen Nandi was a powerful Zulu queen and the mother of the famous Zulu King, Shaka.She was born in the 1760s in the kingdom of Langeni and later became the wife ofSenzangakhona, the chief of the Zulu people. Nandi faced many challenges and hardships throughout her life, including rejection and mistreatment from her husband's family, who did not approve of her relationship with Senzangakhona. Despite these difficulties, she remained strong and resilient, raising her son Shaka on her own and instilling in him the values of courage, determination, and resilience. Under Nandi's guidance and influence, Shaka became a great warrior and military strategist, ultimately uniting many different clans and tribes to form the Zulu Empire. Nandi continued to play an important role in her son's life and reign as king, providing him with counsel and support. After her death in 1827, Nandi was honored with the title of "Queen Mother" by the Zulu people, a sign of her significant influence and importance in Zulu history and culture. She remains a revered figure in South African history, known for her strength, resilience, and determination in the face of adversity.
Queen Moremi
Queen Moremi Ajasoro is a legendary figure in Yoruba history and folklore, particularly in the Ile-Ife Kingdom of Nigeria. According to the legend, she was a brave and selfless woman who sacrificed herself to save her people from raiders from a neighboring kingdom. As the story goes, pledged a great sacrifice to the Spirit of the River Esimirin so that she could discover the strength of her nation’s enemies. She was taken as a slave by the Igbo and due to her beauty and Esimirin’s help, married their ruler as his anointed queen. Once she was in, she familiarized herself with the secrets of her new husband’s army. She then escaped to Ile-Ife and revealed her intel to the Yorubas, who were then able to subsequently defeat their enemies in battle. In gratitude for her heroic actions, the people of Ile-Ife erected a statue in her honor and established the Moremi festival, which is still celebrated today. Queen Moremi is also remembered for her role in the development of the city of Ile-Ife and for her contributions to the arts, particularly in the field of pottery. Her story continues to inspire people, particularly women, in Nigeria and beyond.
Queen Nefertiti
Queen Nefertiti was an Egyptian queen who lived during the 14th century BC, and she is widely known for her beauty and her influence on the reign of her husband, Pharaoh Akhenaten. Nefertiti was likely born in the ancient Egyptian city of Thebes, and she married Akhenaten at a young age, becoming his queen consort. During their reign, the couple promoted a religious revolution that focused on the worship of the sun disc, Aten, and moved the capital city to a new site, Akhetaten. Nefertiti played a significant role in Akhenaten's religious reforms, and she is often depicted alongside him in artistic representations. She is famous for her bust, discovered in 1912 in Amarna, which shows her wearing a distinctive tall blue crown with a golden diadem. The bust is now on display in the Neues Museum in Berlin, Germany. Nefertiti was also known for her political influence, as she held the title of "Great Royal Wife" and likely had significant power and influence over her husband. After Akhenaten's death, Nefertiti disappears from historical records, and it is unclear what became of her. Her legacy, however, lives on as one of the most famous and influential queens of ancient Egypt.

Queen Candace, also known as Kandake, was an ancient queen of the Kingdom of Kush, which was located in what is now modern-day Sudan. She is often referred to as the Empress of Ethiopia because her kingdom included parts of present-day Ethiopia. Candace was not just one individual, but rather a title given to the ruling queen of the Kingdom of Kush. The name Candace is believed to have originated from the Meroitic language, which was used in the region at the time. The most famous Candace is thought to have been Amanirenas, who ruled during the first century BCE. She led her armies in a successful campaign against the Roman Empire, famously defeating a Roman army led by the governor of Egypt, Gaius Petronius. This campaign led to a peace treaty between the Kingdom of Kush and Rome, which lasted for several decades. Queen Candace is remembered as a strong and powerful leader who fiercely protected her kingdom from foreign invaders. Her legacy continues to inspire people in modern-day Ethiopia and Sudan.

Queen Cleopatra was the last Pharaoh of ancient Egypt, known for her beauty, intelligence, and political prowess. She was born in 69 BC and ruled Egypt from 51 BC until her death in 30 BC. Cleopatra came to power in a time of political upheaval, with Egypt under the control of the Roman Empire. She established alliances with powerful Roman leaders, including Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, to protect Egypt's independence and expand its territory. Cleopatra was known for her charisma and charm, and her legendary love affair with Mark Antony has become the stuff of myth and legend. Queen Hatshepsut
Queen Hatshepsut was one of the most successful pharaohs of Ancient Egypt, who ruled during the 18th dynasty in the New Kingdom era, around 1478-1458 BCE. She is notable for being one of the few women to rule Egypt as pharaoh and for her impressive architectural achievements, such as the construction of her mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahri in Luxor. Hatshepsut was the daughter of the pharaoh Thutmose I and his primary wife, Queen Ahmose. She married her half-brother Thutmose II and became the queen of Egypt. When her husband died, Hatshepsut took the unprecedented step of declaring herself pharaoh and ruling in her stepson's name. She then took on the traditional regalia of a male pharaoh and commissioned grand building projects to reinforce her legitimacy. Makeda, also known as the Queen of Sheba, was a legendary queen of Ethiopia who is believed to have lived during the 10th century BCE. Makeda is perhaps most famous for her meeting with King Solomon of Israel, which is recounted in the Hebrew Bible, the Quran, and the Kebra Nagast, an Ethiopian religious text. According to these accounts, Makeda traveled to Jerusalem to meet with Solomon and to learn from his wisdom. The two rulers formed a close relationship, and Makeda returned to Ethiopia with many gifts and treasures. Makeda's legacy has endured for centuries, and she is revered in Ethiopia as a symbol of wisdom, strength, and feminine power. She is also an important figure in the history of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, and her story has inspired countless works of art, literature, and music.
Yaa Asantewaa
Yaa Asantewaa was a queen mother and warrior from the Ashanti Empire in present-day Ghana who played a significant role in the fight against British colonialism. In 1896, the British governor of the Ashanti Empire, Sir Frederick Hodgson, demanded that the Ashanti surrender their Golden Stool, which was a symbol of their independence and unity. The Ashanti were outraged, and Yaa Asantewaa, the queen mother of Ejisu, rallied the Ashanti people to resist the British. Yaa Asantewaa played a critical role in organizing and leading the Ashanti rebellion against British colonial rule. She mobilized an army of thousands of Ashanti soldiers and led them in battle against the British. Although the rebellion ultimately failed, Yaa Asantewaa's leadership and bravery became a symbol of resistance against colonialism and oppression.
