In honor of three transformative Black cultural icons, Mixed Magic Theatre, in collaboration with cultural worker Melaine Ferdinand-King, proudly presents a three-hour writing sanctuary where Jamison’s choreographic rhythms, Giovanni’s bold poetic voice, and Bernice Johnson Reagon’s freedom songs converge. This program is aimed at uplifting Black writing craft and artistic practice. We welcome all whose works contribute to Black creative traditions and women’s history.

Writers of all genres, from playwrights and poets to entrepreneurs and dream-keepers, are invited to gather in our intimate space to create, share, and draw inspiration from the energetic spirits of these artistic foremothers. In community, participants will find themselves immersed in an environment that celebrates the structured discipline, free-flowing creativity, and collective power that these artists embodied in their work.

Participants will have access to open writing space, literary resources, prompts, and café refreshments to fuel their imaginative journey. The space will be filled with the organizing principles that the Wayfinders championed: the understanding that cultural work is both personal and political, that our stories gain strength when shared in community.

While humble writing materials will be provided, writers are welcome to bring their own trusted tools. Free 20-minute, one-on-one writing consultations are available for playwrights and poets upon request. As these three artists understood the power of intimate spaces for artistic development and cultural resistance, capacity will be limited to ensure each writer receives the attention and space they deserve.

PLEASE NOTE: While parking at the Lorraine Mills complex is free, Thursday evenings tend to be high-activity for the building. As such, we strongly recommend arriving 30 minutes before the start of the workshop. In respecting the space and the workshop experience, punctuality is essential. Barring extraordinary circumstances, ADMITTANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED PAST 6:30 PM.
